Perched at an altitude of around 2,800 m in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, Auli is a pristine Himalayan hill station and one of India’s signature ski destinations. Originally developed partially as a training ground for ski troops, Auli now attracts winter sports aficionados, mountain lovers, trekkers, couples and nature seekers alike.
Auli sits amidst coniferous and oak forests, offering sweeping views of snow-capped peaks including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nar Parvat. Beyond its winter charm, Auli’s alpine meadows (bugyals), woodland trails, cable car rides, and proximity to pilgrimage towns make it a year-round appeal.
For families, couples, solo adventurers, and backpackers, Auli serves multiple experiences: skiing, snow adventures, panoramic cable car rides, trekking into meadows, nature walks, and simply breathing the mountain air. The valley’s relative remoteness keeps it less crowded than many hill stations, preserving a tranquil Himalayan ambiance. In short: if you want snowy slopes, sweeping vistas, and a Himalayan escape off the beaten path, Auli delivers.
How To Reach Auli
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, approximately 280–290 km away. From there, travelers take a road journey to Joshimath followed by ascent to Auli.
By Train / Rail: The nearest major railway stations are Rishikesh and Haridwar, each about 250-280 km away. From those junctions, one proceeds by road to Joshimath and onward to Auli.

Note: In winter, the road from Joshimath to Auli may be closed due to heavy snowfall; in that case the cable car / ropeway becomes the only viable access.
Tips / Local Safety
Time your arrival so that you catch the last cable car up in winter (often around 4:20 pm in winter, 5:30 pm in summer)
Roads are narrow, steep and prone to snow/slush — hire experienced drivers.
During monsoon or heavy rain, landslides or road blockages may occur.
Always check real-time weather, road and cable car operational status before commencing.
